Multiple People Shot Near Street Festival in Toledo, Ohio, Police Say

A shooting near a community festival in Toledo, Ohio, on Saturday left at least eight people wounded, according to a City Council member.

The police said they initially responded to a report around 5:37 p.m. of a person shot near the Old West End Festival, a community street fair. But when officers arrived, they found that multiple people had been shot, the department said on social media.

The council member, Theresa Morris, a city councilor for District 6, one of the two districts that make up the Old West End neighborhood, said she was aware of eight shooting victims.

She said there was no confirmation about their conditions. The festival shut down after the shooting and may not reopen on Sunday, she said.

Many of the victims were taken to a hospital, the police said.

What led up to the shooting was unknown.

Now in its 53rd year, the two-day festival celebrates the Old West End district’s community, architecture and history. The neighborhood contains one of the nation’s largest collections of Victorian, Edwardian and arts and crafts homes, according to the festival’s website.

“Summer festivals should be safe spaces for families to spend time together without fear of violence,” Gov. Mike DeWine of Ohio said on social media.
